The black panther is most often leopard or jaguar. Less common jaguarundi. There are no black cougars.

Black panther is the so-called melanistic cat. Melanism is most often characterized by brown or black color of the skin and hair. The reason for its occurrence is the increased content of melanin, i.e. dark pigment.
