The biggest contemporary rodent is the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris). It has 107 – 134 cm (3.51 – 4.39 ft) in length, 50 – 64 cm (1.64 – 2.09 ft) tall at the withers and 35 – 66 kg (77 – 145.5 lb) in weight.

The heaviest recorded capybara was 91 kg (201 lb) in weight. This species of rodent lives in the South America: Panama, Columbia, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay and Paraguay.
