The largest land mammal in the world

The largest contemporary land mammal is the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana). Male has 3.3 m (13 ft) tall at the shoulders and 5.5 tons (12,130 lb) in weight. Females are smaller than males.

The African bush elephant is larger of the two species of African elephant. Second species, African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), has 2.5 m (8ft) in height and 2.7 tons (5,950 lb) in weight.

The biggest recorded African bush elephant was 4.2 m (13.7 ft) in height at shoulders, 8.39 m (27.52 ft) in length and over 10 tons (22,046 lb) in weight.
